Comments about Audio-Technica AT440MLb Dual Moving Magnet Cartridge:

Note this review is for an AT440MLb. I have a AT LP 120 turn table which came with the Audio Technica AT 95e cartridge. Although I really like the 95, and it sounds great especially for the price, I was able to detect a little inner groove distortion with the 95 on the very last songs of some albums. I was wondering if it was the recording or the needle. After doing some research, I learned that the needle on the 440 is a square micro linear where the 95 is elliptical. At lease for me, the 440 needle wiped out the inner groove distortion. Also, as you break it in, it even begins to sound better. Thus far, this is the best sounding needle and cartridge I have ever owned. In the event you are just transferring music from vinyl to digital, the 95 may be good enough. It also sound great in many stereo systems too. If you listen to music in the background, or even semi seriously, the 95 is a great choice. But if you begin to upgrade your system where it makes good recordings sound great, and fair recordings sound worse picking up all the flaws, then you may want to upgrade to the 440 because your upgrade may begin to detect the inner groove distortion. If your 95 needle is worn out and you want a replacement, this is an excellent upgrade. I have no regrets and highly recommend the change. Also, if at first you think it doesn't sound much different, give it a little time to break in. It will make your albums out perform the CD sound by a long run. This needle is for those that really listen to music seriously and love the way vinyl sounds with virtually little or no distortion. After buying this needle, I don't even listen to my cd's anymore. It sounds that good! I know there are even better needles from Audio Technica, but for now at this price, I find this a very good value.

                    A:

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, this will fine. The effective tone arm mass for your turntable is 13.5 gr which makes it a medium mass tone arm. The AT440MLb is a medium compliance cartridge, so this should work well for you.

How does the AT440MLb compare with the MLa version? I've had that
cartridge for several years and like it's clarity and tracking ability. Now I need a new cartridge for another turntable.

Thank you for your inquiry. There are a few differences (for the better) in specs on the AT440MLb. I've read many reviews where folks like the MLb version better.

Thank you for your inquiry. This subject is controversial among audiophiles. We do not recommend any break in period for cartridges.

                • Q:

I just purchased the 440MLb from Fry's Electronics. I purchased the item in-store and the body is green as opposed to purple as shown in the AT literature and all internet reviews and retailers I can find. Fry's also shows the purple body on their website. Can you tell me the significance of the green body? Did I purchase a genuine AT item? Is there a difference in materials or specifications between the green body and purple body 440MLb carts? Is one from early production and one from current production? Any information would be appreciated.

                  Sincerely,

                  Alan

This is highly unusual and does not sound right. Fry's is an Authorized Audio-Technica dealer so it is not a fake. If possible, please contact us directly at Audio-Solutions@atus.com (feel free to reference this question) and please attach photos clearly depicting the cartridge from a couple angles and the packaging if possible. Thanks!

                    A:

The Dual 601 takes a 1/2" mounted cartridge weighing between 2g - 10g. The AT440MLb weighs 6.5g, so it will work just fine!
