  • Overview

The VM540ML MicroLine® stylus cartridge is the premier 500 Series model in Audio-Technica’s new VM cartridge line – a line that harks back to A-T’s early days as a manufacturer primarily of high-end phono cartridges, while also incorporating today’s advanced technology. Like all VM cartridges, the VM540ML is equipped with dual magnets that are positioned to match the left and right channels in the stereo record groove for outstanding channel separation and extended frequency response. The cartridge’s MicroLine® stylus allows it to trace the record groove with incredible accuracy, resulting in nuanced audio reproduction that elliptical and conical styli simply can’t match. The stylus’s multilevel shape also wears better than other styli, while reducing the wear on your records. Includes mounting hardware.

    • Q:

would replacing the AT95E with the VM540ML on the AT-LP120-USB be worth it? or would that be like putting a silk hat on a pig? i want a MicroLine™ so badly, and the 540 seems to be your entry level -- unless i am missing something? i'd have to use birthday AND xmas gift money to afford it, which is why i ask. thank you.

        A:

Yes, the VM540ML would be a sufficient upgrade. As with any setup containing multiple components, you are at the limitation of your "weakest link." The VM540ML will work well with the AT-LP120-USB turntable but would have superior performance with the AT-LP5 or AT-LP1240-USB turntables.

I asked a ? earlier today if the VM540Ml cartridge would work on my Project rpm 1.3 genie turntable, forgot to provide the "Effective Tonearm mass which is 8.6g
      Thank You!

        A:

Thanks for your inquiry. 8.6g is considered a low mass tonearm. The VM540ML is a medium compliance cartridge which is not the most ideal cartridge. A high compliance cartridge is recommended for this turntable. However, our high compliance cartridges are in the more expensive range, you may need to do more research on this.

How is this cartridge different from 440mla/440mlb?

        A:

Thanks for your inquiry. They both have a MicroLine stylus with a nude square shank. The tracking force on the VM540ML is 1.8-2.2, the AT440MLA is 1.0-1.8. The frequncey response of the VM540ML is 20-27,000Hz, while the AT440MLA is 20-20,000Hz.

    • Q:

Is this (VM540ML) a good match for a low mass (6,0g) tonearm on the Pro-ject Debut Carbon?
Asked on 4/19/2017 by Jack Wagon from Ohio

      1 answer

      • CUSTOMER CARE

        A:

Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately the VM540ML is a medium compliance cartridge, and your turntable needs a high compliance cartridge. Your turntable also only works with cartridges that are between 4.5-6g and we do not have any cartridge that will fit under these two conditions.

    • Q:

The two compliance specifications listed, static and dynamic, are very different from each other. Which of the two measurements, would indicate whether this cartridge would be considered high compliance or low compliance compared with other moving magnet cartridges?

      1 answer

      • CUSTOMER CARE

        A:

Thanks for your inquiry. The VM540ML is consider a medium compliance cartridge. For your future reference, you will look at the dynamic compliance to determine whether the cartridge is high, medium or low compliance.

The comparable replacement is the VM530EN. The VM540ML would be an upgrade.

    • Q:

A reader has already asked if the VMN40ML stylus is compatible with his AT440MLB cartridge: yes, it is. I'm doing the same thing. My question: does the tracking force (once the VMN40ML stylus is installed on the 440MLB body) have to be increased half a gram or more (1.8 to 2.2 grams) over the old AT440MLB weight of 1.0 to 1.8 grams, or is this increased weight only necessary when you buy an entire VM540ML cartridge? Why the significant increase in stylus force with this new stylus? Thank you!
Asked on 3/26/2017 by Dragon452 from Miami, FL

      1 answer

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

Thank you for your inquiry. The tracking force should probably remain the same for the AT440MLB, although you may want to experiment with setting it a bit heavier.
