  • Overview

When Audio-Technica engineers developed the new SonicPro in-ear monitor (IM) headphones, they centered the design around the three most important components of a superb listening experience: 1) Sound, 2) Fit and 3) Functionality.

As the flagship of the IM line, the ATH-IM04 is Audio-Technica’s first in ear monitor headphones to feature quad balanced armature drivers. The complex tuning circuitry housed within each driver divides and distributes your audio signal for an ideal, accurate sound reproduction that is so pure you have to hear it to believe it. And the innovation doesn’t stop there – the headphones were specially designed to fit and seal within the ear for the ultimate in-ear monitoring. Each pair comes equipped with three sizes of silicone earpieces (S/M/L) and Comply™ foam earpieces (M) for a customized fit. Detachable cables with formable wire and a carrying case add additional convenience and functionality to the headphones, allowing you to easily take them wherever life takes you.

      Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-IM04 SonicPro™ In-Ear Monitor Headphones:

I always love Audio Technica Tonality signature. I was so excited that they would improve on the BA units IEMS and was producing IM04. I jumped on the band wagon ASAP when it got released and it takes my breathes away.

I am not a Pro in music, but I had been building Large sounding Karaoke systems before, and myself is an Audio-Enthusiast. I love music as my therapy. I love this IM-04 and I am going to review it here to hopefully people will love it too.

1/ Comfort: The memories wire are an excellent idea, you just need to first straight it out, then plug the phone in your ear, then mold the wire around the ear so it can stay in. It is very comfortable 10/10 for an excellent design

2/ Usability: The IM-04 is not picky on sources, though the better the source, the better it shine. It does not however lean toward Bass or High too much as some of the mid-higher tier. When using with smartphones, ipad, ipod, or stream music from youtube, spotify, and so on, the pairs play music smooth, and play all the details that it could possible pull. Very easy to drive 8/10

3/ Durability: The plugs at the removable cord feels a bit filmsy as it is thin, you may feel like it is easily broke and all, and I say be ware of this as especially when you remove and or plug in the cords. Make sure you are right on the angles and the side. The shells are hard acrylic or plastic, easily scratches up, and there is virtually no real way to keep it shinny for a long time as you use it, but it feel very sturdy and not going to break when you accidentally sit on it 7.5/10

4/ Sound: It is onto a more of the easy listening without fatigue, smoother, warmer, good details, but some of the trebles extensions may be lacking and the trebles energy may be lacking a little bit. Where as bass carry more energy and speed. Mid spectrum are clear and transparent. It results in a very smooth, laidback but not lacking of speed, easy on the trebles for long hours listening. It is best recommended when you seek for: Enjoyments, long wear, Passive noise isolation, natural tones, somewhat detailed, and transparent. The very special about this pair is the Spaciousness, the soundstage and depth of field is excellent as much as layered instruments and placements. I give it 8.5/10 for people who love music especially Pop, Jazz, Blue, Classic, and to enthusiasts who lean toward more natural and non colored experiences.

Conclusion, Excellent multi BA drivers IEMS for the price and made in Japan !

      • Q:

Could you kindly explain why this product is discontinued? I was thinking of getting an iem and, hopefully, IM04. I'm a fan of ATH for a long time. The last one I bought was AD2000x and I like it. So please let me know if there is something wrong with this model. I expect a lot out of $500 range headphone so I don't want to get disappointed with this brand. Any advice is very welcome.
        Thank you so much.

Hehe, I dont care if they are discontinued. I am purchasing a pair in a few days. I had the ath im03's for the last year and dont have a single complaint. Incredible iem. I expect even a little better from the ath im04's paired with a c5d dac/amp. I havent tried the new e series and I wont. They dont look as well shaped which means they wont fit as nicely and the flagship 70 doesnt offer 4 armatures.

The IM series has been revitalized by the E-Series in ear monitors. These IEM's follow the success of our M-Series headphones and would be a great addition to anyone's setup! Check out the ATH-E40, E-50, and E-70's!
