Best All Around I just don't know what to say. These are awesome. They have incredibly flat response, with neat range. Even if these don't specialize on the range you like, you can easily tune these with an amp to fit your needs. I usually never had to do it though. The build quality is amazing. These are super comfortable and durable. I used to have these in my teens, and I wasn't careful with my things. I basically wore these 24/7, even in my sleep. I even took these to school. These guys really held up. The thing with these is that they are so comfortable, I eventually forget that I'm wearing them. The only cons I've had with them is that these aren't wireless, so even though I took these to school I had to deal with the big wad of cables in my pocket. They also met their demise when my dog bit the cable. However, I understand that they are designed for studio indoor use, so it's really all my fault. For my uses, I'd get the m50x version instead. With a price like this, you really can't go wrong. If you're thinking of buying it, just do it. March 18, 2015
Amazingly honest These headphones are amazingly flat and accurate. I use these when mixing and mastering recordings. The 45 mm driver extends very low into frequency without coloring the sound warmer as many bass-heavy cans tend to do. They won't break the laws of physics: you can expect bass to break up around 28 Hz but still be represented down to 20 Hz. Comfort-wise you might find these a distant second to your favorites, but they don't really feel like "work" headphones for the first hour. Build quality is high, and an included jack screws off of the cable to allow use with quarter inch sources as well. The cable spring on the jack is further evidence of a durable well built product. The cable is not removable from the headphone end, which may concern some, but these are serious headphones for production and having a stable connection here is one less worry in the signal. The sound stage is very neutral and transparent, and the level of precision and placement makes you forget the medium level of comfort. These headphones feature swiveling cups for one-ear monitoring and ease of carrying, and come with a soft bag for carrying. If you record, mix or master these should be on your short-list. Good sounding, good looking headphones. Headphones sound great, clear treble. The bass is very much there and it is very smooth sounding, great. The mids are clear as well. They are better than I had expected, I would gladly pay $200 or more for these. I mainly use them for listening and producing and they work well, I also usually just leave them plugged in and use them for gaming as well and they have worked there too. Only thing I can say bad about them is that the cable is a bit too long for some things, like mobile listening or listening, say, with an iPod in public. November 19, 2014
Great Quality, only one con This product has surpassed any expectations of mine. The audio quality rivals any other top brand and price is reasonable for the overall quality. One con is that that the cord is too long for casual listening in public. December 26, 2013
Amazing headphones!! I don't usually write reviews for products that I buy but for these i feel I must. They have amazing sound quality, far surpassing any that I have previously tried. If you are looking for a great pair of headphones, here they are. The cord is a little long, which is good, but it is slightly annoying for casual listening. July 25, 2013
Simply the best These headphones are simply the best headphones I've ever heard. I always make it a point to try out new headphones and so far nothing has come close. I recently moved to Europe and was not able to bring my headphones with me, due to the bulk, but I love them so much that I decided to have them shipped out despite the cost. December 30, 2012
Absolutely Fantastic As just a casual listener my review may not be the most reliable or professional peace of writing but anyways. I found the ATH-M50 strait cable headphones to be completely 100% the best headphones I've ever used, owned and seen as long as I've been interested in high quality audio. As a bass head every aspect of bass is important, from high quality and large bass capacity to it being balanced and not overriding all the other sound. The bass is absolutely flawless and doesn't drown out any of the other frequencies, the highs are crisp and not to sharp (I hope that makes sense) and the mids are perfectly balanced. The only problem I had was that they got a little uncomfortable but that was after 6 1/2 hours so I would expect that. Over all ATH you did an extraordinary job and I you continue being the best audio tech company out there. December 25, 2012
Absolutely Amazing!!! I have had these cans for at least a year and all I have to say is WOW!! I absolutely LOVE these headphones! I use them all the time in multiple environments for multiple purposes; mainly as onstage monitors, but also for casual listening, and when I'm producing. There is no need to go and buy a pair of active noise canceling headphones with these things. These are my onstage monitors I use when i play guitar at my church and my church plays the music really loud and even if I have a minimal amount of sounds going through these things I CANNOT hear anything outside of these! I won't hardly listen to anything with my in-ears because the quality of the ath-m50's is just unmatched in anything I've ever heard. I compared them to my friends $300 AKG's and they blew them out of the water! I'm in love with these things! I am constantly recommending them to my friends if they are looking for great headphones. BUY THEM!! YOU WONT REGRET IT!! November 26, 2012

    Answer:
I think the reason some people say one year, is that the Purchase Registration Card that comes with the M50 headphones says "One year limited warranty." However, this model (regardless of cable type) is not listed as one of the exceptions to the two-year warranty. The Audio-Technica rep confirmed the two-year warranty in this thread, as you saw. But A-T might want to think about including an updated (and correct) registration card in their packaging.

Which ear cup does the wire go into?

When you put on these headphones properly, which ear has the wire attaching to the ear cup? Right or Left? I tried to look at the pic but didn't see any marking of R or L.

Will a smartphone drive these headphones?

I have read many great reviews, but have not seen a definitive answer if a smartphone will drive these headphones properly. I see they are rated at 38ohm and that is supposed to make them pretty sensitive, but I just kind of want a straight answer.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Answer:
Not all smartphones are created equal. Hence the reason for non-definitive answer. I have a 3D EVO that powers the M50 to a good extent while my Galaxy Note has a bit of trouble powering them properly (i.e. slight drops in audio levels on certain recordings). While the EVO powers them OK, there's definitely an audible difference in dynamics going from the Evo to my receiver without any post-processing when achieving the same listening volume.

So...yeah your mileage may vary. At the very least it will be audible, just don't expect a full sound spectrum when you connect to such devices.

You can always audition them at the least. See if there's a local store nearby that can allow you to sample the headphones and have a go with your smartphones.

Thank you for your inquiry. The ATH-M50's are my headphone of choice. I use them with my iPhone. They sound very nice and have plenty of output. I cannot speak for all smartphones, but I would think they would pretty much the same.

    Answer:
The ATH-M50s Headphones are not available with a shorter length of straight cable. I can only suggest trying the coiled cable version, the ATH-M50, instead. The cable is 1.2 meters in length when it is in the relaxed state.
