Audio-Technica’s ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® on-ear headphones use proprietary active noise-cancelling technology to provide a comfortable listening environment in areas with high ambient noise. Delivering noise cancellation up to a remarkable 95%, the ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® headphones feature Audio-Technica’s new Tri-Level Cancellation™. Mode 1, ideal for use on airplanes, trains and buses, applies maximum noise cancellation to low frequencies. Mode 2, designed especially for use in noisy offices or crowded places, targets the mid-range frequencies, while Mode 3 creates a pristine, peaceful environment ideal for study.

The headphones feature four miniature microphones, two in each earpiece, that pick up ambient noise and create a sound-cancelling signal to effectively block the noise. The ATH-ANC9 headphones also offer a cable with an inline microphone and controller for answering calls and controlling music. The mic and controller support select products, including iPhones, iPads, and many iPods. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern and it is designed for crisp intelligibility, so your voice will be clearly transmitted without having to speak directly into the mic.

These headphones are designed to offer you crystal-clear sound that makes Audio-Technica the choice of leading artists worldwide. Wherever you happen to find yourself—in the comfort of your living room, in a noisy office, or settling in for a long flight—there is no better way to experience audio or immerse yourself in a peaceful environment.

I have been using these headphones for more than 2 years and have not experienced any of the problems described here by some users. These headphones are comfortable to wear for long periods and they certainly block out a lot of engine noise. The sound is smooth, detailed and focused, with the tightest bass that I have ever heard.

However there is one major issue due to poor design of the battery compartment. Most products that use AAA batteries rely on one of the terminals having a small amount of flexibility or springiness so that the battery, once fitted is constantly pressing against both terminals and will not suddenly disconnect if knocked. This is something that has apparently been overlooked by the designers of these headphones, as the battery fits very loosely, with very little pressure against the terminals. I travel on a bus often and whenever the bus hits a bump in the road, the battery disconnects and the sound cuts out. This is extremely annoying.

I bought the ANC9s at an airport as when I tried them on their sound quality was so brilliant. However, after enjoying them for one flight, I was plagued with incessant problems with the headphones.

First, the noise canceling ability basically stopped working. I explained my problem to customer service and they told me to send them to their HQ in OH, which I did. They then, without informing me, sent the headphones back to me informing me there was no problem. I spoke to the head of customer service explaining that the same problem remained, and he told me to send them in again, at my expense both times. This process took a couple of months.

This time after some pushing, they sent me a new pair. The new pair worked fine for about half a month before the left ear phone (the housing for the battery) began crackling all the time making it near impossible to enjoy listening to any kind of music. I haven't even bothered contacting customer service.

I would not recommend purchasing ANC9s unless you are looking for a way to make your life significantly worse.

      Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® Active Noise-cancelling Headphones:

I bought these for an upcoming long-haul plane trip, after a friend recommended this brand. I have to say that these headphones are disappointing in all regards.

      1) Only one side produces any sound, and that has noticeable static, which is increasing over the time I've been testing them. The other side is dead.
      2) Sound cancelling is at best 50%, nowhere near 95% as advertised.
      3) The case is ENORMOUS and far too bulky to use for travel.
      4) The earpieces are very uncomfortable as they exert a lot of lateral pressure on the ears. YMMV.

These will be promptly returned to the retailer.

I have had these headphones for over a year and I like these headphones a lot.

They work very well and are comfortable on long distance flights and make a huge difference. You would be amazed how much nicer it is in cattle class with these headphones!

The only problem I have had is that somehow the cell-phone type cable broke even though I haven't been using it.

          Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® Active Noise-cancelling Headphones:

They are comfortable, sound great and look nice. After a couple of months of use the active cancelling started acting up. Now I have a low rumbling/vibrating driver on the left side of the set. This only happens when the NC switch is on but I use the noise cancelling all the time meaning that it happens often. This is very annoying specially when tilting my head to my right side, this makes the rumbling/vibration even more pronounced. I will be contacting the service center to see if this can be fixed but this shouldn't happen at all. Reading the other reviews I noticed that others are experiencing the same issue.

I was excited about this product and got a fantastic deal of the major online retailer but pair I purchased developed a faint high pitched squeal which I tried to ignore but gave up and returned them, I asked for a replacement pair bc I loved them so much, minus the issue, but of course the second pair not only had that high pitched squeal but also had an additional problem, the noise cancelling was not even in both ears, and I could really feel it, I could notice the difference and couldn't handle it. Please AT fix these issues. My previous pair ant-anc7b was fairly good pair, my cord got damaged and my ear cups leatherette covering the foam came apart at the glue, which I stitched together.

I've had the Bose QC15 and Soul SL300 in the past but I prefer my new ACN9 over them. I like the sound quality over both previous headphones and the noise cancellation is almost as good as the QC15. It does produce stronger bass which I prefer, but overall the sound quality is well defined. The headphones are very comfortable and appear to be well made. Ive had them for only a couple of days so reliability is undetermined. I did recommend this same pair to my friend who travels often. He went with me when I purchased mine and he borrowed it over lunch. We went right back to the store and he bought the other pair in stock. I did purchase the extended warranty thru my retailer so I dont have to deal with some of the issues Ive read about on this website.

The quality of sound speak for himself. I have tried Beats By Dre and Bose, but the best combination of precise sound and huge noise canceling is present in ATH-ANC9. They still working after battery runs out (but without noise canceling, of course) and the control cable shipped with product works both with my Nexus 4 android phone and my Ipod / Ipad. Battery life is about 15h with rechargeable NiMh.Awesome.

The sound quality of these headphones are great, but after the first month or so, the noise-cancelling function just stopped working, which defeats the purpose of why I bought these headphones in the first place. • A:

If you just want to use them as headphones for listening to music, use the other cable provided. The one that just has the 3.5mm stereo (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) type plugs on each end. NOT the cable with the inline microphone/controller that has a communication (Tip, Ring 1, Ring 2, Sleeve) type plug on the end.
If you want to use them as both headphones and use the inline microphone, you will need an adapter cable that breaks the microphone and the headphone out to two separate plugs.

Does this have 2 microphones for each ear piece to reduce the noise (like Bose QC 15 and Sony mdr10rdc) or it has only one microphone per ear piece?

                            • A:

I recommend removing the slide-out battery compartment completely from the earcup first. The polarity orientation is illustrated in the bottom of the battery holder, but can be difficult to see. Particularly in low light. The tip (positive +) end of the battery goes toward the small silver contact end of the holder. The bottom (negative -) end of the battery goes toward the end of the holder that has the opening. When reinstalling the battery compartment into the earcup, make certain to push it in until it clicks. Only after it clicks will it be locked into place.

You should get good sound on it's own. A good, dedicated headphone amplifier will typically take good sound to another level however. Additionally, if the headphone amplifier has its own power source, the demand on the battery in your phone while listening to music will be reduced.

It will not. The jack on the ATH-ANC27 QuietPoint Headphones is actually a 2.5mm jack which accepts 2.5mm twist lock plug.

                            • A:

You will need to contact the manufacturer of your gaming console to see if it accepts a 3.5mm (a.k.a 1/8th inch) headphone connection. If your gaming console does feature a headphone connection, then the ATH-ANC9 would work.

                              Thanks!
