Audio-Technica’s ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® on-ear headphones use proprietary active noise-cancelling technology to provide a comfortable listening environment in areas with high ambient noise. Delivering noise cancellation up to a remarkable 95%, the ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® headphones feature Audio-Technica’s new Tri-Level Cancellation™. Mode 1, ideal for use on airplanes, trains and buses, applies maximum noise cancellation to low frequencies. Mode 2, designed especially for use in noisy offices or crowded places, targets the mid-range frequencies, while Mode 3 creates a pristine, peaceful environment ideal for study.

The headphones feature four miniature microphones, two in each earpiece, that pick up ambient noise and create a sound-cancelling signal to effectively block the noise. The ATH-ANC9 headphones also offer a cable with an inline microphone and controller for answering calls and controlling music. The mic and controller support select products, including iPhones, iPads, and many iPods. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern and it is designed for crisp intelligibility, so your voice will be clearly transmitted without having to speak directly into the mic.

These headphones are designed to offer you crystal-clear sound that makes Audio-Technica the choice of leading artists worldwide. Wherever you happen to find yourself—in the comfort of your living room, in a noisy office, or settling in for a long flight—there is no better way to experience audio or immerse yourself in a peaceful environment.

I have been using these headphones for more than 2 years and have not experienced any of the problems described here by some users. These headphones are comfortable to wear for long periods and they certainly block out a lot of engine noise. The sound is smooth, detailed and focused, with the tightest bass that I have ever heard.

However there is one major issue due to poor design of the battery compartment. Most products that use AAA batteries rely on one of the terminals having a small amount of flexibility or springiness so that the battery, once fitted is constantly pressing against both terminals and will not suddenly disconnect if knocked. This is something that has apparently been overlooked by the designers of these headphones, as the battery fits very loosely, with very little pressure against the terminals. I travel on a bus often and whenever the bus hits a bump in the road, the battery disconnects and the sound cuts out. This is extremely annoying.

I bought the ANC9s at an airport as when I tried them on their sound quality was so brilliant. However, after enjoying them for one flight, I was plagued with incessant problems with the headphones.

First, the noise canceling ability basically stopped working. I explained my problem to customer service and they told me to send them to their HQ in OH, which I did. They then, without informing me, sent the headphones back to me informing me there was no problem. I spoke to the head of customer service explaining that the same problem remained, and he told me to send them in again, at my expense both times. This process took a couple of months.

This time after some pushing, they sent me a new pair. The new pair worked fine for about half a month before the left ear phone (the housing for the battery) began crackling all the time making it near impossible to enjoy listening to any kind of music. I haven't even bothered contacting customer service.

I would not recommend purchasing ANC9s unless you are looking for a way to make your life significantly worse.

      Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® Active Noise-cancelling Headphones:

I like the way these headphones work and sound for the majority of the time. I also have the ATH-700Pro headphones and I put these on over those simply because they are more comfortable. I also really like the noise cancelling. After spending a month of travelling including many flights, two of which were 14 hrs. long I could really appreciate the noise cancelling capability. When wearing thicker framed glasses, the memory foam pad does not fit so well around the head, compromising the NC ability. I also noticed that when in turbulent air or in the car there is a rattling/rumbling sound that is pretty disruptive. I am an Audio Technica loyalist with many headphones and a turntable so I have faith in the quality of the product. The rattling/rumbling is a little bit of a disappointment but I will continue to buy their products.

        Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® Active Noise-cancelling Headphones:

There is no doubt that audio-technica makes a fine product but the ANC9 was a disappointment. My previous ANC7 headphone was an excellent value and I literally wore them out. I decided to replace them with the 9. The 9 doesn't offer that much better noise cancelling over the 7 for the money. The 9 eats batteries compared to the 7. The battery compartment was designed by an engineer not considering use and therefore difficult to replace the battery as compared to the method of the 7 which for my old pair was super simple and easy. I would have assumed that audio-technica would understand their customer base and know that anyone over 40 would have real trouble with changing the battery. Very poor design. I have had to sew the entire seam of the foam cover on both ear cups. The splitting of the seam occurred just before and after the warranty period. Oh and when the battery dies while in use you'll get loud pop in your ears...very annoying. As I said audio-technica produces quality products and I will consider another headset from them....but it would be the 7 NOT the 9.

                  Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® Active Noise-cancelling Headphones:

I bought these for an upcoming long-haul plane trip, after a friend recommended this brand. I have to say that these headphones are disappointing in all regards.

                  1) Only one side produces any sound, and that has noticeable static, which is increasing over the time I've been testing them. The other side is dead.
                  2) Sound cancelling is at best 50%, nowhere near 95% as advertised.
                  3) The case is ENORMOUS and far too bulky to use for travel.
                  4) The earpieces are very uncomfortable as they exert a lot of lateral pressure on the ears. YMMV.

These will be promptly returned to the retailer.

They work very well and are comfortable on long distance flights and make a huge difference. You would be amazed how much nicer it is in cattle class with these headphones!

The only problem I have had is that somehow the cell-phone type cable broke even though I haven't been using it.

They are comfortable, sound great and look nice. After a couple of months of use the active cancelling started acting up. Now I have a low rumbling/vibrating driver on the left side of the set. This only happens when the NC switch is on but I use the noise cancelling all the time meaning that it happens often. This is very annoying specially when tilting my head to my right side, this makes the rumbling/vibration even more pronounced. I will be contacting the service center to see if this can be fixed but this shouldn't happen at all. Reading the other reviews I noticed that others are experiencing the same issue.

I was excited about this product and got a fantastic deal of the major online retailer but pair I purchased developed a faint high pitched squeal which I tried to ignore but gave up and returned them, I asked for a replacement pair bc I loved them so much, minus the issue, but of course the second pair not only had that high pitched squeal but also had an additional problem, the noise cancelling was not even in both ears, and I could really feel it, I could notice the difference and couldn't handle it. Please AT fix these issues. My previous pair ant-anc7b was fairly good pair, my cord got damaged and my ear cups leatherette covering the foam came apart at the glue, which I stitched together.

The left driver has decided to stop working. I've switched cords and tried with multiple devices (iPhone, iPad, ps4, Mac book pro). I verified all devices work with my bowers and Wilkins headphones. Is there anything I can do or try to get the left driver working. I've tried with the noise cancelling turned on and off.

I recently purchased the 'Audio Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint Noise-Cancelling Headphones' with my primary need for business travel on airplanes.

When I switch between the 3 noise cancellation modes, I hear what sounds like noise cancellation for .5 seconds, then what sounds like nothing. I don't notice a difference on either of the 3 settings after the .5 second changeover. Is this normal? or do I potentially have a defect?

Yes, the Active Noise Cancelling Technology may be turned off via the switch on the side of the headphones.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9 Headphones are not made with any animal byproducts; the earpads are not leather. The earpads we use are made with a vinyl-based or polyurethane-based material that we refer to as leatherette.

                            • A:

If you just want to use them as headphones for listening to music, use the other cable provided. The one that just has the 3.5mm stereo (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) type plugs on each end. NOT the cable with the inline microphone/controller that has a communication (Tip, Ring 1, Ring 2, Sleeve) type plug on the end.
If you want to use them as both headphones and use the inline microphone, you will need an adapter cable that breaks the microphone and the headphone out to two separate plugs.
