As a teen myself, I was wanting a versatile multi-purpose headset, primarily for listening to music and gaming at home. I have found that this headphone exceeds my expectations at these tasks. As far as the physical aspect and aesthetics of this product, it is very durable with silver accents lining the exterior and the Audio Technica logo engraved on the side. They are a bit bulky and large, but the comfort compensates for any size concerns. As far as sound quality, these headphones have shimmery highs accompanied by an excellent bass response that is punchy yet not overpowering over the mids and highs. Even though these headphones are intended for monitor and studio use, they don't have a completely neutral sound with a slight emphasis on the lows and highs. I personally like this choice but I feel it is worth mentioning because they are not for people who want a completely flat sound. This aspect of the m50xs accompanies for the sound signature of modern music that naturally has this emphasis, making me like it even more. I was a bit leery about purchasing these since I wanted a portable headset, but the m50xs work well as portable headphones with a designated mobile cable, along with a carrying case and a very flexible design. Overall the Ath-M50x is a headset for those who do not want to buy Beats, Skullcandy and all of the other name brand headphones that make up the portable audio market today, but want an all purpose headphone for use at home or on the go. I would recommend these in a heartbeat over any other headphone I have tested previously.

Immediately after getting them, I found I couldn't wear them for more than an hour before my ears started hurting. The pads were nowhere near thick enough. But... they did sound incredible. I took a foot long strip of toilet paper and twisted it into a rope, then I crammed it under the pads all the way around... problem solved. Flash forward two years, I'm running them through a focusrite USB interface, and I realize the sound is INFINITELY better with a good headphone amp... don't think Your cell phone can truly power these things.

I dearly love these headphones, but after 2 years the plastic layer on the earpads and headpad are crumbling away from their backer. Audio Technica has been making these phones for years, and they haven't figured out that these parts wear out faster than the rest of the unit? My next set of phones will be from a company that offers replacements. These phones have years of life left on them, maybe even a decade, but if I can't replace the headpad without desperately searching online for ANYTHING that might even remotely fit, then I'm just going to find phones with support from a better company.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones:

Over 4 years of serious use over a wide range of music types, these headphones are the best I have ever owned and do not fail me when I require quality sound in order to fully appreciate high quality music.

This is an incredible product and at a somewhat decent price. It is absolutely worth every cent.

The ONLY con that I have had with these is that I had to purchase replacement ear pads because my ears get warm and humid (note that my climate is very humid though), causing some deterioration of the foam material. But even then, this is to be expected with headphones in general.

After having the previous model, the ATH-M50's, for over 5 years I can say that I will always choose AT.
Sure there is some wear and tear, but I haven't really taken care of them.

I've dropped them a gazillion times, been treating the cable badly, wore them in rain and snow - still kicking to this day!

I mix and master recordings for a living and have discovered the M50x headphones give a fairly true representation of what's being recorded . The M50x rival some of my higher priced headphones ($1000 plus) and parallel my studio monitors very closely. They have proven to be excellent, especially for what they cost. They give a true flat response and are, in my opinion better than any products from Sony and Sennheiser in this price range.
Of course the m50x headphones are a subjective piece of equipment that may work for your critical listening , and would suggest you A/B them before purchasing them.

They worked for the first 2 months then the left side just went dead. I checked the cable's continuity, opened up the left cup to check the soldering integrity. All checked out. Maybe the electronics running that speaker burned out. I'm not sure. Maybe I just got a lemon.

I got these headphones 4 years ago (technically the are the M50 not M50X). They have only gotten better the longer I have owned them. The earpads can be uncomfortable but the sound is terrific. It blows my mind that I've owned them for so long and they still sound this good. If you can tell, I love these headphones and would recommend them to everyone.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones:

Thanks for your inquiry. The M50x has a 3.5mm headphone jack only, it does not have a microphone function. So you cannot use it to answer phones.

Thanks for your inquiry. When you are hear distortion by turning up the pre-amp, that means you are putting too much signals into the headphones, which will make that distorted noise.

We have a pair of the ATH-M50x headphones. My son needs a microphone to use these for when he plays on the PS4. Do you have an adapter that has a microphone? The headphone jack on the headset is quite unique and we can't just use any inline microphone. PLEASE help!

You may connect the ATH-M50x headphones to a standard headphone output connection. You may contact your source manufacturer to inquire of their product specifications.

Trying the other cables will help determine if the issue is within the cable or headphones. If the headphones work with the other cables, please contact our parts Department at (330) 686-2600 ext 5002 or at parts@atus.com for assistance with this.

Thanks for your inquiry. The M50x does not come with a case, but comes with a pouch. When it is folded up, the dimension is 3.5"x4.5"x7". I would recommend you to go to local music store or electronic store to try them out before you buy it.

Audio-Technica does not recommend burning in any Audio-Technica manufactured headphones. Unfortunately, there is currently no scientific standard, nor peer-reviewed and quantifiable data to support headphone burn-in, nor the value of it therein. This is especially true for the ATH-M50x headphones. I suspect one would probably stand a better chance of reducing the life of the headphones rather than reaching some ideal operating condition, which I suspect one would never be able to hear in the first place. There are plenty of varying reports about burn-in, but no peer-reviewed scientific data to support it. The only accounts seem to be perceptual, but again no peer-reviewed scientific data to support it. Either way, to quote www.head-fi.org "You are free to be a believer, and you are free to be a skeptic." In my opinion, it will take time to get used to how any audio sounds on any headphones. But again, Audio-Technica does not recommend burning in any Audio-Technica manufactured headphones.

Hi, I have been noticing electronic clicks/corruptions in the audio when listening to streams online and on mp3s. Is this a cord or headphone malfunction? Also, the cups will physically click when flipping them into the storage mode - not sure if this is supposed to happen, but it might be related to the electronic clicking.

There is "nothing fancy" in the ATH-M50x headphones that would not allow an external microphone. You may check with your 3rd party manufacturer to inquire their compatibility.
