As a teen myself, I was wanting a versatile multi-purpose headset, primarily for listening to music and gaming at home. I have found that this headphone exceeds my expectations at these tasks. As far as the physical aspect and aesthetics of this product, it is very durable with silver accents lining the exterior and the Audio Technica logo engraved on the side. They are a bit bulky and large, but the comfort compensates for any size concerns. As far as sound quality, these headphones have shimmery highs accompanied by an excellent bass response that is punchy yet not overpowering over the mids and highs. Even though these headphones are intended for monitor and studio use, they don't have a completely neutral sound with a slight emphasis on the lows and highs. I personally like this choice but I feel it is worth mentioning because they are not for people who want a completely flat sound. This aspect of the m50xs accompanies for the sound signature of modern music that naturally has this emphasis, making me like it even more. I was a bit leery about purchasing these since I wanted a portable headset, but the m50xs work well as portable headphones with a designated mobile cable, along with a carrying case and a very flexible design. Overall the Ath-M50x is a headset for those who do not want to buy Beats, Skullcandy and all of the other name brand headphones that make up the portable audio market today, but want an all purpose headphone for use at home or on the go. I would recommend these in a heartbeat over any other headphone I have tested previously.

Immediately after getting them, I found I couldn't wear them for more than an hour before my ears started hurting. The pads were nowhere near thick enough. But... they did sound incredible. I took a foot long strip of toilet paper and twisted it into a rope, then I crammed it under the pads all the way around... problem solved. Flash forward two years, I'm running them through a focusrite USB interface, and I realize the sound is INFINITELY better with a good headphone amp... don't think Your cell phone can truly power these things.

I dearly love these headphones, but after 2 years the plastic layer on the earpads and headpad are crumbling away from their backer. Audio Technica has been making these phones for years, and they haven't figured out that these parts wear out faster than the rest of the unit? My next set of phones will be from a company that offers replacements. These phones have years of life left on them, maybe even a decade, but if I can't replace the headpad without desperately searching online for ANYTHING that might even remotely fit, then I'm just going to find phones with support from a better company.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones:

I mix and master recordings for a living and have discovered the M50x headphones give a fairly true representation of what's being recorded . The M50x rival some of my higher priced headphones ($1000 plus) and parallel my studio monitors very closely. They have proven to be excellent, especially for what they cost. They give a true flat response and are, in my opinion better than any products from Sony and Sennheiser in this price range.
Of course the m50x headphones are a subjective piece of equipment that may work for your critical listening , and would suggest you A/B them before purchasing them.

They worked for the first 2 months then the left side just went dead. I checked the cable's continuity, opened up the left cup to check the soldering integrity. All checked out. Maybe the electronics running that speaker burned out. I'm not sure. Maybe I just got a lemon.

I got these headphones 4 years ago (technically the are the M50 not M50X). They have only gotten better the longer I have owned them. The earpads can be uncomfortable but the sound is terrific. It blows my mind that I've owned them for so long and they still sound this good. If you can tell, I love these headphones and would recommend them to everyone.

The cords to the headphones have all broke. I was a big Audio-Technica fan, I have the at4040 microphone, which is amazing. Purchased a lot of products from them but the these headphones will be the last. Poorly made, falling apart. Shorting in out with the signal. Not impressed and paid almost $200.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones:

These are stellar headphones for the money. Lossless files are a must or you will be getting far less out of this product than you could. I think the looks complement it very well—despite them being near half the price as those silly Beats, people notice them at least twice as much. I gave it a 4/5 for "Ease of Use" because the carrying back it comes with is a tight fit. Over these six-or-so months, however, the bags seems to have broken in pretty well and it goes in much more easily. A small increase in size would be nice.

So, a friend of mine that lives in Atlanta,US, ordered a pair of these headphones through Amazon for me as a favor. I took advantage that my dad was on a work trip in Atlanta so she gave them to him. The problem is when he was returning back to our country, Costa Rica. In security check at the Atlanta airport, an officer confiscated the headphones with the statement that they were made from dangerous materials and couldn't go in a flight... So my dad came with no headphones and a refund is not possible because it isn't Amazon fault! So, my question is, why did the officer took the headphones saying that? Is that true? They're made from dangerous materials? The refund or anything is not the problem, but I'm just wondering. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your inquiry. The ATH-M50x are not made of any hazardous materials and they are sold worldwide. You will need to check with security to find out why they kept them.

Hello I purchased the ATH-M50x but they were too big for my head. Even on the smallest setting the earphones clamp down on the top of my ear and I can't wear them longer than a few minutes. Is there a different headphone made by audio-technica that is a little bit smaller? Or is there a modification that can be made to the headphone to make it a little smaller?

I bought a headphone sweater on amazon and put a piece of foam between the band and my head but it looks ridiculous and don't think it will work out.

                                      Thank you,

                                      Sam

Thank you for your inquiry. There are 3rd party companies that make other ear pads that are thicker and may allow for a better fit. Please note that by doing so, could change the sound just a bit from the spec since the driver would be further for the ear.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Headphones are not made with any animal byproducts; the earpads are not leather. The earpads we use are made with a vinyl-based or polyurethane-based material that we refer to as leatherette.

The headset does not work using an RCA to female 3.5mm cable. It is fine with 3.5mm input jacks. I am trying to use it with the outputs from an Audioengine A2+ and N22. Ca you suggest a solution?

Is there a way to fix the left speaker? I've tried changing the wires and it worked for a minute with the long wire then turned off again and hasn't worked since.
