I'm an engineer by trade, and have built amplifiers since I was a kid, now with well over 30 years of engineering experience and a lot of knowledge richer I would class this product as a surprisingly good reproducer. The imaging of these headphones is quite amazing, making them an easy listener that doesn't fatigue very quickly. For monitoring they might be a little too forgiving, and the precision of the region below 100hz is not too great. It surprised me some critique on these headphones is that it lacks bass, all I can imagine is you probably run gear not capable of delivering sufficient current, or you've spoiled your reference point of your own ears by always listening to a far too bass pronouncing system.

These are 38 ohm impedance headphones, that naturally demand some drive and therefore will sound more different on different equipment than a HD600 for instance, which is a lot higher impedance. It's rather the popular choice of headphone manufacturers of today, to compensate for the mpobile devices lack of output power, making the best out of such poor outputs.

It is still an amazing package, they are not only comfortable and light, but the materials also feel very pro and the design is well done. The plug in cable first enters the shell with a fairly thick plastic covered shaft, before turning in to a minijack connector, smart as it won't break too quick and locks in nicely firm.

I own electrostatic headphones of Stax and these come really near in terms of the spatial performance, there is a tonne of depth in the reproduction, midrange is very clean and very precise and the high range is clear, but not too sharp.

Would definitely recommend them for just nice listening, not so much for monitoring as they are simply not linear enough and not precise enough in the bottom end.

These headphones are built extremely well. They are comfortable and I love the design. If that weren't enough they sound phenomenal! I love the locking cable design and the extra cables and bag that come with the headphones. If you are thinking about purchasing these just do it. You won't be sorry.

I am confident that I made the best choice and in my opinion these are the best closed cans out there. With that said I have just a couple pieces of feedback.

They do leak a bit of sound which can be a problem when tracking vocals.

The other problem is that I love these things so much that I want to take them with me everywhere! I understand that these are studio headphones but buying two pairs of headphones one for studio and one for personal use isn't very practical for students like me. It seems that a better solution would be a cable with a mic and volume control. The most frustrating part is that the adapter is proprietary which means I can't purchase a 3rd party cable. PLEASE AUDIO-TECHNICA make a cable with volume control and a microphone!!! I would gladly purchase one if you made it!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones:

First off here are the pros of these headphones. These are definitely some of the best "value for your money" headphones on the market but are in no way cheap! These headphones have great sound quality, comfort, look and durability. I would definitely suggest them for anyone looking for a headphone with all these qualities.

Now here are the few cons. These headphones aren't really meant for public use. But then again these are studio monitor headphones so keep that in mind if your looking for a more mobile headphone. These headphones aren't meant for "bassheads", that being said the low end is still very punchy but not as prominent as some other headphones. I guess this could be expected because they're a flat response headphones meant for accurate sound.

So all in all I would definitely recommend these headphones to people who need an accurate sound. I wouldn't suggest them to people looking for mobile headphones that have lots of bass because that's just not what they're made for. I want to thank Audio Technica for making an amazing product that I now use in my day to day life!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones:

I have already exchanges twice, and both headphones have a measureable I consistency between drivers at low frequency (40-80hz). Not sure what to do at this point, a blind test can confirm it is not my hearing. I guess driver mismatches are quite common? The left channel has always been the louder one at those frequencies, no matter what device I power them with. Otherwise they sound phenominal, but this flaw can be a little distracting if you get it.

Got it for christmas. Sounds better than any set of beats I've ever used. The sound is clear, and you can hear all of the layers in a song like the artist intended. The extra chords are awesome, and when I plug it into my 50 dollar guitar amp it sounds like a 2000 dollar amp. Some headphones have that built in bass boost, but these headphones pretty much do spot on bass that kicks a♡$ without being overkill. The 180 degree twisting makes them really comfortable to wear on one ear or around the neck. The build quality is exceptional, and blocks out most surrounding sound even in loud places (thanks to the heavy duty materials I assume).

TL;DR: awesome headphones. Better than beats costing twice as much. Buy it

I've owned a number of Audio Technical products including their microphones for instruments as do all of my fellow musicians. It has been a very reliable product with great performance. Because of this, I ordered the ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones, expecting only satisfaction, particularly because of the number of rave reviews. Out of the box and plugged in as directed, only the left side worked. Thinking it was one of the cables provided, I tried all of the rest with the same result. It didn't matter whether I plugged it into my laptop, stereo system, or TV (all tested and all working) and only the left side emitted sound. I noticed that this product is manufactured in Taiwan and not in Japan like the rest of my products. Could this be the source of the problem? Is outsourcing worth the risks to reputation? Going back to my Yamaha headphones that still bring joy after more than 30 years.

I wanted a pair of headphones that produce good, clean sound with just a touch of great low frequencies and these did not disappoint. For the price I paid for them I am very happy with my purchase. I use them at home and a pair of Skullcandy Buds at the office but looks like its time to ditch the Skullcandy Buds.

These are not $2000 phones, but I have done comparisons, and I really doubt you will get anything close to this quality for anywhere near the price. I read a review about the bass being lacking-not true, in fact in a 1 on 1 comparison with V Moda-these not only had better bass response, but were not in the least muddy, and the mids and highs were not even comparable they were so much better. Sure, if you spend 10X as much, you might well improve, but nowhere near this price point is anything I have tried comparable. Bottom line-if you like great music and you want to enjoy listening, these are perfect-possibly if you are a sound engineer, and can spend 4 or 5 digits, yeah you might find something better, but these are great.

I was set to buy the Sennheiser 380, which I think is the direct competitor this product in this price range. I initially decided that I wanted a pair of decent headphones when I first donned a pair of Bose quietcomfort 13s when I was about 15. After researching into it, apparently Bose are worse than Sennheiser but twice the price. This lead me onto the Sennheiser 380s. Again, I researched into the 380s and their competitors. This was how I was fortunate enough to come across Audio-technica's m50s. They are far superior to the Bose range, for a third of the price that Bose was asking for this level of quality. To Sennheiser, I cannot attest. I chose these after reading several reviews that stated that the Sennheisers had a "veiled" sound, with less bass "punch" than these m50s. For classical music the Sennheiser's may be better, but for me they are an absolutely amazing set of cans for it's price range (and I do enjoy classical music too). For the majority, I enjoy EDM music (dance, trance, house), however, I find they are also amazing for any kind of D&B, rap, 80's rock, emo rock, punk, pop an d even older classics such as Eno, Elvis, Vangellis etc.

I would warn that the bass can be slightly overpowering if you are after a more balanced can, but personally I enjoy the punch. The sound does also differ depending on what device I listen to it on. My main (windows) PC rig has a soundblaster audio card in which dramatically increases the bass despite my nest efforts to control it using the driver software. My Macbook gives a more balanced sound and my Android galaxy s5 actually has the least bass punch of the three. Of each, I never find myself wanting for more sound or bass, but there is obviously a difference in drivers.

They tend to be a little fatiguing around the underside of my ears, but I can easily wear them for an 8 hour day with two 20 minute breaks and a 1 hour break without any pain, discomfort or discomfort.

Hi, I recieved the audiotechnica ath-m50x headphones from GuitarCenter. I brought them home and they worked fine. When I removed smaller detachable cable from the headphone the small tip of the wire came off. I put it back on, but it seems to unscrew and not stay on. How do I go about getting a replacement cable?

I currently own a pair of these headphones and they work really well with a variety of programs and devices, however, whenever I use them with iTunes I hear a skipping or clicking sound occasionally. Using the same audio jack, this does not occur when I listen to music from an internet browser or other audio programs, for example, windows media player. Do you have any idea why the headphones might have a compatability issue with iTunes?

If he headphones are working well with everything but iTunes, then the issue would definitively be with iTunes. If there was an issue with the headphones, you would experience it consistently on every device, and on all playback material. Because of this, we advise contacting Apple Support.
