NAMM SUMMER SESSION — Guitar virtuoso, multiple GRAMMY® award-winner, and longtime Audio-Technica user Larry Carlton has offered legendary performances on hundreds of recordings, including over 100 gold albums with the likes of Crusader, John Lennon, Steely Dan, and Carlton’s renowned jazz group Fourplay, as well as on numerous film soundtracks and television themes. In a presentation held recently at Hotel Okura in Tokyo, Japan, Carlton’s newest release Firewire (BMG/Bluebird Records) earned the 2005 ADLIB award in the Best Jazz-Fusion category.
An array of Audio-Technica microphones was employed to achieve the remarkable sonic representation that is found on Firewire. Carlton’s signature sound combines warm jazz and blues tones. Joe Chiccarelli, tracking engineer for Firewire, worked with producer/engineer Csaba Petocz to select A-T’s AT4060 for electric guitar. AT4047/SV’s and AT4051’s were used on the Hammond B3. In addition, AT4050’s were used on drums, and extensively used on electric and acoustic guitars. Chiccarelli comments, “Audio Technica mics are a part of every session I do. They were used on Larry's guitar amps as well as acoustic guitar. The AT4050 is reliable and smooth and honest sonically. I know the mic very well and always trust its sound.” Carlton adds: “Joe and Csaba represent to me the highest quality of engineering and producing. Audio-Technica mics were their first choice. I could not be happier with the way my guitars sound on Firewire.”
