When I was studying audio engineering 8 or 9 years ago, I was anxious to start putting what I was learning into practice. I was awarded a special grant designed to help technology students get the tech they were studying - in essence, I was told I must buy "toys" with the money! (Ouch, stop twisting my arm already!) I purchased a digital interface and 2 of this set. They looked like a good set to start out with, and the price was good.

They turned out to be some of my most used mics. They have good overall sound for just about any sound source, nice range, and a SNR that rivals mics costing far more. When funds came again, I ended up buying 2 additional sets.

The 2021 is a fantastic mic for hi-hats and other brass, guitar, and toms. The 2020 is great on vocals and other broad-spectrum instruments, as well as foley.

Surprisingly, the place these have really performed well for me is on piano. 2 of this set is my go-to for baby grand piano: Put the 2021s in an X/Y near coincident pair covering the hammers inside, and the 2020s in the same configuration 12-16 feet outside the open lid, mix (with the appropriate delay on the 2021s) and WOW! I've impressed several professional pianists with the results.

If you're looking for a good set of general-purpose, inexpensive mics, give these babys a try. You'll be glad you did!

I originally picked up the studio pack and after hearing what the 2020 could reproduce used as an overhead for drums, I soon added another to my setup. I primarily use the two 2020s in a Glyn Johns setup with a kick mic and let me just say that I haven't enjoyed such a full drum sound at home EVER. I will NEVER go without the AT2020 mics as long as I can help it! I have to admit that I haven't used the 2021 enough to comment on it just yet, but when I have a chance I'll certainly give my full opinion... But so far it's been a decent mic! Cheers A-T!!

I purchased the AT2041SP set of two microphones as my first condenser mikes for my home recording studio. I researched many mikes before settling on Audio-Technica. The AT 2020 had received many glowing reviews on the internet for its performance and toughness. The reviews were spot on. This a tough and reliable mike. I have used it in my studio and when playing out. It provides a clear reproduction of your sound. The AT 2020 has been the workhorse in my recording. It provides a very nice proximity effect on acoustic guitars. I have also used the AT2010 for miking guitars as well. Both mikes have proven to be reliable performers. I would highly recommend them to anyone starting in home recording.

What other equipment would I need to get the (AT2041SP Studio Microphone Pack) to work with my PC?

I'm a beginner, and am not sure if i'm missing a piece to make this microphone package work with my computer.

Thank you for your inquiry. You will need a USB audio interface that will do the analog to digital conversion and provide 48V of phantom power to the microphones. Of course you will need XLR to XLR microphone cables and you will need recording software.

                • Q:

Question on performing live with these mics.

I'm interested in using these mics in a live performance setting, preferably a quiet one. I expect to use the 2021 for vocals and the 2020 for my Collings guitar, in which I am loath to put a pickup. I've used them for recording on my Ipad with an Apogee One and have come to appreciate them for that. But I've used them separately because the One only has one 48 volt input. I intend to buy a two-channel phantom power unit to power them in a live setting if you think it will work. I have a 120 watt Fishman Artist acoustic amp. Unfortunately, it only has 24volt phantom power.

Do you think these mics will function reliably and with a minimum amount of trouble in that kind of environment?

Another possible set up would be to use my Sennheiser 835s (dynamic) for voice and the AT2020 with a single channel phantom power unit for guitar. Would that work better?

Any thoughts/advice/info etc would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
