Comments about Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone:

Until I began using the AT2020 USB I used basic basic computer microphones for recording voiceover or music. I knew I was missing something so I explored options for better quality products. A fan of Audio-Technica products I consulted with an audio expert and this mic was recommended. I have not been disappointed. From its included mini tripod set up and ease of use on all my USB enabled products, to the exceptional audio quality on all of the various recordings I do, I found this microphone to be everything I had hoped for. In reproducing piano music, singing, and voiceover recordings the AT2020 performs at a very high-level. The highs, the lows, and the mid ranges produce professional studio quality sound with a very sensitive response. It allows me to hear nuances in all areas of my recording needs that do not get picked up with basic recording equipment. I consider this a very high value for the price and recommend it highly.

            The microphone has been great!
I purchased around a year ago, and I love it.
It worked right out of the box.
No hard installs just plug it in and it works!
Although recently the cord has started acting up, and I need a new one... :(
Other than that It works great!

Comments about Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone:

Mic is extremely fussy with Audacity on a Windows 7 laptop. Mic works with other applications on the computer, but is almost impossible to use on a Windows 7 machine with audacity. Three of us fiddled with it for hours yesterday and eventually got it to work with the software. Couldn't replicate it again today; after several frustrating hours, it still won't work with Audacity. OTOH, I downloaded Audacity onto a desktop machine with XP and it worked flawlessly.

The box says the microphone works with Windows 7, but the manual included with the microphone makes no reference to the setup and use of the microphone on a Windows 7 machine.

              I am very disappointed.

This microphone WORKS extremely well with any Mac Machine and Windows XP. With following a few simple rules on recording audio the results are excellent! I had problems with the AT2020 USB on a PC with windows 7 professional (device not recognized) but when used on a MAC or a machine with Windows XP it is recognized immediately and works flawlessly.

Bought this microphone a few years ago and I love it. Only problem I'm having is that for some reason my codec splits it into two inputs, and the stereo input is considerably louder on the left channel than it is on the right. For Mono recording it's perfect. It has only done this on my Windows Vista system, all other system it works fine.

Sound is phenomenal, though the tripod it comes with is cheaply made and will break if the microphone falls.

I see videos everyday on the Internet that are from big name companies that sound like they were recorded from the bottom of a barrel. This microphone gives you clear sound with a minimum of fuss. My main experience has been with voice and it picks up voice very well. Crystal clear results.

This is a great little mic for home studios with computer control.

Recording is always subjective and the AT2020USB microphone has been used to record guitar amplifiers. I always recommend using your ears to determine what distance, volume, etc will best capture your desired sound.

                                      Range of sound pickup

Hi, I'm thinking about getting this microphone. The thing is my computer is pretty loud (the fan is always going). Will this microphone pick up that noise as well as my voice? (I do need to be at my computer when the recording is being done). What is the best type of mike for me to get clear/excellent audio quality recording of my voice without the annoying sound of my computer getting picked up from the background?

The AT2020 USB Microphone is a fairly sensitive microphone, so fan noise could be a problem. As with any cardioid pattern type microphone however, the majority of sound arriving at the rear of it can be rejected simply by positioning the microphone so that the rear is facing the source of the noise.
For best results in a high-noise environment however, it's hard to beat a headworn microphone. Our PRO 8HEx Dynamic Headworn Microphone does a very good job of rejecting background noise. It is highly recommended for spoken word applications where speech intelligibility is important.
The ATM73a Condenser Headworn Microphone is recommended for singing applications.

I've been using it for a while now, but one day, it stopped working. Blue light still shines from the microphone but it says "USB device not recognized" when I plug the USB in. I tried running anti-virus, and it still didn't work. I even bought a new line that connects the microphone to PC in case if the line was the problem, but that wasn't it. Is there any way to fix this? or do I just have to buy a new microphone.

Try the mic on another computer if possible. If you have the same problem on another computer, there is a problem with the microphone. Following is a link to our repair return instructions should you wish to return it to us for repair/replacement. If the microphone is within the warranty period (2-years), be sure to enclose a copy of your dated sales receipt to cover any warranted repair/replacement that may apply.

USB Microphones can be EQ'd depending on which recording software you're using, but usually after recording. However if it was working well previously, and isn't working currently, then we will need to troubleshoot, and maybe even recommend Service. Unfortunately, there is no hard-reset for the microphone, other than unplugging it and rebooting your computer.

To be absolutely certain, please make sure you are addressing the AT2020USB from the side where the blue light is, as this is a side address microphone and should not be addressed from the top or back. Other than that, you may also try a different USB cable and computer. If that does not resolve your issue, then Service with ATUS will be recommended.

AT2020 distorts and cuts out at close range.

I am using this mic to record some drums at close range but it gets very distorted and some sounds cut out all together. I have the recording volume set very low and recording level peaks between -6 and -3 dB. Is there something wrong with this mic? I just bought it and have hardly used it at all. I am using Windows 8.1 and Audacity to record.

It appears the mic is getting hit with too much air from the drum, causing the diaphram to bottom out. Do you have a windscreen that you can try over it or a pop filter you can place between it and the drum to experiment with? You can also try turning the mic off-axis slightly and/or backing it away to reduce the amount of the air pressure that is hitting it directly.
Try it on a guitar cabinet. If you DO NOT have the problem when micing the guitar cabinet, the mic is probably ok. If you Do have the problem, send the mic in to be checked.

Thank you for your inquiry. Please note there is no special driver for this microphone. It uses the USB Audio Codec which is a standard part of your operating system. You may want to check with your computer vendor of OS support.

Is this mic good for general gaming?

I have a pair of headphones that I really enjoy and I also have a cheap headset I bought something like 8 years ago. I prefer using my better headphones when playing games so I currently have my headset around my neck to have a mic close enough to communicate. I'm looking for something that I could leave on the desk (probably 2-3 feet from my mouth) and that would have good sound quality. I would rather this then have something glued to my headphones and another cable hanging around.

Would the at2020 usb be a good microphone for this? I don't do any podcasts or anything. This would be purely for general gaming, skype, etc.

In terms of leveling without getting clipping/distortion/cut-outs, it is very important to pay close attention to your BOTH your input/output values, in both your operating system and your recording software.

Do you notice that the issue occurs only in Mixxx, or does it occur previous to uploading the audio into Mixxx? If the issue occurs after importing the audio into Mixxx, then the issue is somewhere in Mixxx. If it's before, then it could be related to your recording software or the mic. This is where your input/output scheme in both your recording software and your OS are very important. Also, some programs demand so much RAM that it can cause lags in recording, which result in a cut-out. When using Mixxx, shut down all other programs. But again, if the audio is clean during recording, and you are only experiencing this with Mixxx, then the issue is with Mixxx and you will need to contact them.

Something we highly recommend is purchasing an AT8137 Windscreen for your AT2020USB. This will prevent you from clipping out the microphone element itself, and causing a cut-out.

Thank you for your inquiry. These are completely different microphones. One major difference is the sensitivity. The AT2020USB is much more sensitive.
