Comments about Audio-Technica System 10 Camera-Mount Portable Camera-Mount Digital Wireless Systems:

Here is the link to the YouTube video that I just posted with 3 of the walk tests that I did with the System 10 wireless. The unit achieves better than expected range; easily delivering the advertised 100 feet. On multiple occasions, I was getting 150 to over 200 feet.
(View and hear the video at http://youtu.be/SnudYcodS0U )
Again, bear in mind that these are low cost systems and not intended to compete against the high quality wireless that we use on major shoots. But for an inexpensive unit, they perform surprisingly well.
I brought the system with me to the Cinema TV Arts Dept at California State University Northridge in order to shoot some more tests.
CSUN has a soundstage for the film program that is approx 50 ft by 75 feet. Camera and the System 10 stayed in the rear corner, while I moved around the entire space. Even while hovering near a laptop and the lighting dimmer board -- the System 10 performed flawlessly. And, yes, there is WiFi in the stage.
We went into the main corridor of the film/TV building (Manzanita Hall), which is dotted with electronic RFI emitters and WiFi routers (according to the department's Chief Video Engineer). The System 10 transmitted perfectly the entire length (approx 150 feet).
Heading outside onto campus, on multiple tests we achieved 150 to 250 feet. Although we did encounter the occasional minor dropout on one or two of our footpaths, the unit was always reliable up to 125 feet; and depending on the pathway, sometimes good past 200 feet. I included one of those walk tests, where we made it 220 feet before the signal began to cut out.
The aforementioned Video Engineer was curious about transmitting through walls, so I stayed inside the corridor while he went outside and roamed around the exterior of the building. Signal held up nicely passing through just one exterior wall, but did drop out when he turned (still outside the building) 90 degrees from the corridor and thus placed multiple interior rooms in our signal path.

Clean, affordable wireless for filmmaking & presentation

Comments about Audio-Technica System 10 Camera-Mount Portable Camera-Mount Digital Wireless Systems:

I recently acquired a System 10 camera-mount wireless and had a chance to run some tests on it. Audio is extremely clear and quite clean. The 2.4 GHz bands are away from TV UHF clutter; and the system appears to automatically seek out the cleanest freq's in that bandwidth. Even in a heavy RF environment, I had no interference issues. Working range is around 125 to 150 feet, line of sight, outdoors. At least, that was the walk tests that I did with the unit. (Around 75 paces). Indoors, I went from my kitchen (at the front of the house) all the way to the back door and then out into the yard as far as my yard extended, with no drop-outs. Pretty impressive for an inexpensive unit! Receiver is lightweight 4 ounces, so easy to mate with camera (even on SteadiCam). Very good for reality shows, since 3 or 4 of these hardly weigh anything! I found the trick to good audio is to pair it with a really good lav. I like the AT899cW, but the MT830cW is a good alternative and less pricey if you have to watch the dollars.I tested the unit both with the supplied stereo mini output cable and also my own 1/8 to XLR. Both worked fine. I do a lot of teaching (you have probably seen me at NAB and NAMM), and I like being able to just replace the podium mics with the receiver (using XLR output cable) and then wear the transmitter with a headworn mic so that I can move around and demo stuff. Since the receiver is internally powered, I do not have to worry about running AC to it. And being 2.4 GHz, the signal is clean even in an RF heavy convention center. Street price for the system is under $400. Add $170 for an AT899, or $100 for an MT830. And don't forget a 1/8 to XLRm cable. The receiver uses USB for charging or external power, so you can always plug in one of those USB external battery packs that run iPhones and such, if the internal battery runs low.

Plug in multiple receivers to USB charger

I have several of the system 10 camera receivers that I use together and I want to charge with a single outlet. Can I plug them into a multiple USB charger that supplies more than 0.5A outputs that comes with the units. The charger I would like to use supplies 1.0A and 2.1A on the ports.

                    Thanks.

Connecting to XLR input on video camera?

I need to plug the receivers to my XLR inputs on my camera. I bought this adapter "Audio-Technica CP8306 Adapter Cable", is that correct? Do I change the setting from Dual Mono to Balanced output on the receiver?

The adapter 1/8inch connector looks different than the 1/8inch connect that came with the receiver. So just want to make sure I have what I need.

You will want to use the "Balanced Output" mode on your receiver.

While the CP8306 will work, a proper balanced cable will be available soon.

                    I'm confused

If one pack can only handle one transmitter, what does this feature mean: "Multi-pairing function to link a single receiver with up to eight body-pack or handheld transmitters..."

So I'm filming an interview between two people and they each have a microphone? Do I need two complete sets of transmitter and receivers?

Also, what does this mean: "Three levels of diversity assurance: frequency, time & space"

                    • A:

Multi-pairing refers to that can pair up to eight transmitters to one receiver and you assign a number (1 to 8) but you can use jus one at a time.
Then if you need 2 mics simultaneusly, you need 2 receivers.
This system is digital as WIFI, then you can share one frecuency multiplexed for the use of multiple systems or the system changes the frecuency if detects interference, you won´t notice that, it is automatic.
I have 3 systems working togheter with total confidence.

                    • A:

Each wireless microphone requires it's own receiver IF they are to be in use at the same time. Multi-pairing refers to the ability to pair multiple transmitters to the same receiver so that when one transmitter is turned off, the next can be turned on and it will connect with the receiver right away. You do not have to go through the pairing process again for the next transmitter. This is helpful in applications such as live sound with multiple instruments used by the same performer. A guitar player for example may use several different guitars. If there is a transmitter for each guitar, he would simply turn one off and the next on. He would not have to walk over to the receiver, put it in the pairing mode, then pair the transmitter to it. Please note that the multi-pairing function is availble on System 10 Camera-Mount (model ATW-R1700 Receiver), System 10 Stomp Box (model ATW-R1500 Receiver) and System 10 PRO (model ATW-RU13 Receiver) systems only. This function is NOT available on System 10 Stack-Mount Systems (model ATW-R1100 Receiver).

Frequency Diversity sends the signal on two dynamically allocated frequencies for interference-free communication. If the system senses a problem with its current operating frequency it switches over to a second, spare frequency. At that time, another frequency is selected to be the spare. This process continues automatically as often as needed and is imperceptible to the user. There is no interruption of the audio signal during this process.

Time Diversity sends the signal in multiple time slots in order to provide immunity to mutipath interference.

Space Diversity uses two antennas on each receiver and transmitter to maximize signal integrity.

It´s not interchangeable, but last up to 8 hours, for me is enough.
then you must charge for about 2 or 3 hours using the micro usb charger, you can use your phone charger too.

You can pair up to eight transmitters but one an a time.
Then just turn on one of the transmitters and the receiver will pair in a few seconds.

the description says this: Multi-pairing function to link a single receiver with up to eight body-pack or handheld transmitters

I'd love to know if thats true.

Yes, it is included a 3.5 to 3.5 cable.
But you can make different cables as is possible to change the output between balanced and unbalanced output.
In the unbalanced option ya can use an stereo cable to feed your DSLR because is configured as double mono output, that is useful.
