    Good value.

I have the MLa version for several years. Tracking is as good if not better than my V15xMR, which means excellent. But the sound is more engaging than the long discontinued V15. Some may describe the sound as forward or crisp in the highs, but that's a personal preference. I'd say it is a more "modern" sound as opposed to early analog types of cartridges. I swap it back and forth with a DL103 moving coil if I desire something more retro. Turntable used is a Technics SL-1200 Mk5 tracking at 1.5g. Good value for the money without getting into stratosphere cost. I bought a spare stylus for mine just in case...

Top value for money. Very musical and engaging.

Fantastic value for money. AT-440 MLb on Linn LP12 with Akito 2b tonearm is a great match. Very engaging and fun.

Great upgrade for the LP 120 Turntable

Note this review is for an AT440MLb. I have a AT LP 120 turn table which came with the Audio Technica AT 95e cartridge. Although I really like the 95, and it sounds great especially for the price, I was able to detect a little inner groove distortion with the 95 on the very last songs of some albums. I was wondering if it was the recording or the needle. After doing some research, I learned that the needle on the 440 is a square micro linear where the 95 is elliptical. At lease for me, the 440 needle wiped out the inner groove distortion. Also, as you break it in, it even begins to sound better. Thus far, this is the best sounding needle and cartridge I have ever owned. In the event you are just transferring music from vinyl to digital, the 95 may be good enough. It also sound great in many stereo systems too. If you listen to music in the background, or even semi seriously, the 95 is a great choice. But if you begin to upgrade your system where it makes good recordings sound great, and fair recordings sound worse picking up all the flaws, then you may want to upgrade to the 440 because your upgrade may begin to detect the inner groove distortion. If your 95 needle is worn out and you want a replacement, this is an excellent upgrade. I have no regrets and highly recommend the change. Also, if at first you think it doesn't sound much different, give it a little time to break in. It will make your albums out perform the CD sound by a long run. This needle is for those that really listen to music seriously and love the way vinyl sounds with virtually little or no distortion. After buying this needle, I don't even listen to my cd's anymore. It sounds that good! I know there are even better needles from Audio Technica, but for now at this price, I find this a very good value.

    Fantastic dynamic response

This is a great stylus cartridge, with ultra-crisp, clear, singing highs and clean bass.

Specification says 0.12 mil Nude. What is the other radius, 2.2 mil like the new 540?

You may contact Audio-Technica Europe for further assistance.

I bought a AT-440MLB in December. I see it's discontinued. What is the modern equivalent? What new stylus will work as a replacement? Thanks

The VM540ML is the comparable model.

What is the highest quality cartridge you can use for the LP120 I see you are discontinuing the 440Mlb what is going to be the replacement?

Please contact our Audio Solutions Department at (330) 686-2600 ext 5000 or at for assistance with this.

Is this unit compatible with the AT LP120. How hard is it to swith out the stock, card?

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes the AT440MLb is compatible with the AT-LP120-USB. Additional infomration here: If you would like to, you could also purchase a new AT-HS1 or AT-HS10SV (AT-HS10BK) Headshell. This way, if you'd like, you could purchase one of the above cartridges without having to change out the cartridge every time you'd want to switch. Additionally, it is recommended that you use a Cartridge Alignment Protractor to properly align the cartridge to the turntable, for proper tacking of your vinyl records. You may find information on alignment here:

Does this cartridge require VTA adjustment on a AT-LP120. I'm upgrading from the stock cartridge, just seeing what adjustments that should be made to correctly install it. Thank you

Thank you for your inquriy. No, you will not have to change the VTA.

Will the ATN440MLB stylus fit the ATN440MLA?

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes the ATN440MLb is the replacement stylus for the AT440MLa cartridge.

Will this work with the Rega Planar 3 (2016)? Do I need to buy a headshell or make adjustments to the tonearm?

Thank you for your inquiry. The Rega Planarv3 appears to have a low mass tone arm. If so the AT440MLB, which is on the high side of medium compliance should work well on this turntable.

Will this cartridge work on a Teac TN-300 turntable?

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, this will work well with this turntable.

Is it possible to purchase this cartridge pre-mounted to the aluminum headshell?

You may contact your local dealer to inquire if that is a service they can offer.

Will this fit to my Rega RP3 with RB 303 tone arm, without any modifications? Specifically will the height be OK? Thanks

Thank you for your inquiry. The RB303 appears to a medium mass tone arm. Since the AT440MLb is a medium compliance cartridge this should work well.
