Best closed headphone for home use

    5

I stumbled upon these when checking out an Audio-Technica store, and the price tag immediately peaked my interest. Upon examination, I began to understand the low price tag; the ATH-a550z are entirely made of plastic, and the head "wings" feel like they could break if the headphones were thrown into a bag. However, as soon as I put them on and began playing music, I realized that it didn't matter. First of all, despite their poor build quality, the headphones are actually perfectly comfortable, being rather light and having just the right amount of clamp. The adjustment system could easily fit my large head, no remarks here. The bass was tight, balanced, and non-emphasized. Bass lovers might not be too pleased, however. The mids were the best I have ever heard on a sub-$200 headphone, being extremely smooth, balanced, and not drowned out. Finally, the highs were crystal clear, and provided almost all the detail I could possibly ask for without being too sibilant. The sound stage on these was so good that it had me questioning whether they were actually closed back for a brief moment... And then I realized that was the reason why the cups were so large. Overall, if you want the best pair of sub-$200 (neutral) headphones you can find FOR HOME USE, then forget about all other options and get these. I would not recommend these however, if you had to listen to music on the go, as they are large, and would probably break with ease.
