Audio-Technica’s ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® on-ear headphones use proprietary active noise-cancelling technology to provide a comfortable listening environment in areas with high ambient noise. Delivering noise cancellation up to a remarkable 95%, the ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint® headphones feature Audio-Technica’s new Tri-Level Cancellation™. Mode 1, ideal for use on airplanes, trains and buses, applies maximum noise cancellation to low frequencies. Mode 2, designed especially for use in noisy offices or crowded places, targets the mid-range frequencies, while Mode 3 creates a pristine, peaceful environment ideal for study.

The headphones feature four miniature microphones, two in each earpiece, that pick up ambient noise and create a sound-cancelling signal to effectively block the noise. The ATH-ANC9 headphones also offer a cable with an inline microphone and controller for answering calls and controlling music. The mic and controller support select products, including iPhones, iPads, and many iPods. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern and it is designed for crisp intelligibility, so your voice will be clearly transmitted without having to speak directly into the mic.

These headphones are designed to offer you crystal-clear sound that makes Audio-Technica the choice of leading artists worldwide. Wherever you happen to find yourself—in the comfort of your living room, in a noisy office, or settling in for a long flight—there is no better way to experience audio or immerse yourself in a peaceful environment.

I got these as a gift

I've owned a pair since Sumer 2015. Heavy use. After a year, the inner foam cover split. If I wear them over 2 hours, it makes the top of my head sore. I am aware you cannot fit all heads properly as that would be an impossible task to overtake. Poor battery slot design so the battery is hard to replace. When battery runs out, there is a loud pop noise. I love the sound (I veer towards heavy bass sounds). For the price, I would not recommend to a friend.

    Flimsy subpar product

After having a pair of Bose quiet comforts I decided to try audio technica. I immediately noticed the noise canceling was sub par and carried a static hiss compared to my nose. Sound quality sounds a bit drowned out without the noise canceling feature on. To top it off my ear cushion liner split after minimal gentle use.

Very good travel headphones, great sound.

Have bern using these for over 2 years, still going strong. Have repkaced the 3.5mm cable with a stronger 3rd party one with mic which works fine. Excellent sound quality, case, but wish battery life was a little better for going both ways on 20hr long hauls, but the pair takes 1 AAA so carry a spare or two. Love travelling with these!

    I'm worried about Audio-Technica's quality

The noise cancelling is effective but over all don't bother. After 2 months the right earcup split, releasing the inner foam. Then the left one split. i paid $40 for another set and they lost my order. They finally sent the replacements and I couldn't put them on. Also these are extremely bassy phones and the mid-range changes depending upon whether or not you have the noise cancellation on. The mid-range is muddy without it on. I finally threw them away. I expected more from Audio-Technica!

I wouldn't buy this product again

After less than 50h of use, ear cushions have to be changed / repaired.

Buy, Recommend and Gift (but ugly)

When searching for great value, need and performance ANC 9s checked all these boxes with an added bonus over Bose which is the ability to change your level of noise cancellation or not use it at all. Sound quality is impeccable, the earphones extremely comfortable, light and fold into a compact style especially if you do not want to carry the carrying case. My only complaint is 1) the design for such a beautiful product technology wise they do not match aesthetically :-( this is a disappointment please revisit the design. 2) I've had these for 3 years but some time lets say a year in because of the "leather" on the headphones is not the greatest quality (or I can be abusive) I feel as if it did not hold up the way I desired.

Excellent choice for working, studying etc.

Briliant noice cancelling, really comfortable in the head. Bass is a bit too much for my taste by overall great sound (my reference is the Sennheiser sound, generally speaking). Now please make a version with bluetooth...

Massaging my ear drums with the purring of delightful tunes

After being disappointed with the build quality of my previous ANC headphones (company and brand not important), I put in some solid research into a replacement ANC headset and the ATH-ANC9 ticked all the boxes for me in specifications and other reviews. My ATH-ANC9's arrived this morning and I have spent the day extremely happy and being in my own noise cancelled world, listening to a wide variety of music. The packaging was nice, came with all the required accessories, being able to select different levels of ANC is also quite useful. These headphones are exactly what I wanted. The only improvement I can think of is possibly better cables, for the price the cables don't feel all that durable, however no major drama as they are not hard wired so I can simply order more durable replacement cables if needed. Love your work Audio Technica, keep doing what you do best.

    Best all round headphones.

2 years later using them in the household, between 3 people, also as part of the recording studio collection to use when reviewing music, listening to regular music from smart phone/tablet, gamin on the PC, while gardening, travelling, and where noise cancelling or good quality headphones are required. My only dislike was the short cable included, battery life is great when you use good quality rechargeable batteries, and if you look after them after every use "clean them, and put them away in the provided hard case" then you prolong their life by a so much, cable got caught and came off MANY times from the headphones, and when i plug it back, they work just as good, best part is that when the battery runs out, they can still work "as regular headphones" and therefore they are not useless like some other brands i've had in the past. They do need to be looked after and handled not so rough or thrown around, but that's like anything else , look after them and they will last

    Pretty Good

I like the way these headphones work and sound for the majority of the time. I also have the ATH-700Pro headphones and I put these on over those simply because they are more comfortable. I also really like the noise cancelling. After spending a month of travelling including many flights, two of which were 14 hrs. long I could really appreciate the noise cancelling capability. When wearing thicker framed glasses, the memory foam pad does not fit so well around the head, compromising the NC ability. I also noticed that when in turbulent air or in the car there is a rattling/rumbling sound that is pretty disruptive. I am an Audio Technica loyalist with many headphones and a turntable so I have faith in the quality of the product. The rattling/rumbling is a little bit of a disappointment but I will continue to buy their products.

What are the earpads made of? Leather or Leatherette

Thank you for your inquiry. The earpads are not made of real leather. They are made of a synthetic material.

the black outer covering that holds the yellow sponge rubber innards in place on my over-the-ear audio-technica headphones (which I LOVE!) has split, and no longer gives a good sound-seal. Is there a replacement part I can order (and install myself) that would fix this? I hope so!

I lost my chord to connect my wonderful headphones to my audio source. Can I purchase a new chord and what chord should I purchase?

Please contact our Parts Department at (330) 686-2600 ext 5002 or at for assistance with this.

Can these headphones be used wireless?

The Active Noise Cancelling feature may be used without a wire connected but for audio playback, you will need to connect the audio cable between your source and headphones.

Are these wireless and can also be plugged into headphone jack? I am looking for a good pair of headphones that can be wireless for riding a bike/ bus rides and then be able to be plugged in when studying on a laptop, etc.

    Miss Nora

No, the signal from your source device will travel via a cable. The cable is detachable to utilize the noise cancelling technology without a hanging cable.

Can I use these for computers? Mainly play games and listen to music, but Im looking for something not too bulky and not heavy on the wallet. Any other suggestions of headphones?

Yes, you may plug the ATH-ANC9 headphones into standard 3.5mm stereo headphone output connections.

Can I purchase replacement earpads for these headphones and if so where?

What are the exact dimensions of the earpds? I'm trying to determine how well these will fit over my giant ears.

    The Karakarn

Thanks for your inquiry. The inner side of the earpad is 1.4"x 2.4" and the outer side is 3"x 4".

I bought these noise-cancelling headphones 6 years ago but have not used them in years. I no longer have the instructions, so I'm not positive that this is the model that I have. It looks like it is ... I see the button on the left ear to turn it on and off. I have a fresh battery installed. I see the button on the left ear for the 3 "modes" but the sound only lasts a couple of seconds and then it goes quiet. What am I doing wrong? I just want to hear white noise to cancel out people talking next to me at work.

Does it matter which end of the cable is plugged in to the headphones and the noise producing device (when listening to music). One end of the cable is straight in-line with the cord, and the opposite end is a 90 degree angle from the cable.

The 90 degree angle connection end should be plugged into your source (I.E. iPod, smartphone, CD player, etc.) and the straight connection will go into your headphones.
