In January we opened the Lab M50x, asking fans to design the limited-edition ATH-M50x and ATH-M50xBT2 headphones for 2024. Bolivian DJ Sergio Gamarra’s design was chosen as a finalist from 14,532 submissions by our panelist - and original M50x designer - Suzuki. His design then won the public vote, with over 3000 likes, making it the winner of the Lab M50x competition.
We spoke to Sergio about his design, DJ career and what winning the competition means to him.
What made you participate in the Lab M50x?
A friend of mine told me about the Lab and I saw a unique opportunity to collaborate with a leading brand in the audio industry. I wanted to contribute my perspective as a DJ and music lover.
What inspired you to select the blue, orange and gray colors for your design?
The choice of the colors blue, orange and gray for my design was driven by several inspirations. First, blue represents confidence, reflecting the quality and reliability of the M50x headset. Orange evokes energy and creativity, highlighting the excitement of the music in us. Finally, gray adds a sense of sophistication and elegance, balancing the color palette and adding a touch of modernity.
Why did you add the vibrant orange component (a lot of people really like this addition!)?
I added vibrant orange to my design because I wanted to incorporate an element that was eye-catching and dynamic, able to grab attention and stand out from the crowd. Orange is a color that evokes energy and creativity, I wanted that vibrancy to be reflected in the design of the M50x headphones Plus, the vibrant orange adds a touch of originality which makes it appealing to those looking for something unique and distinctive, I'm glad to hear that a lot of people like the color.
You mentioned that you are a DJ, how did you start DJing?
My interest in music naturally led me into the world of DJing. From a young age, I started experimenting with sound equipment and exploring different genres of music. Over time, I developed skills in mixing, which allowed me to start DJing at local events. A passion for music and sharing that passion with others fueled my DJ career.
What are your favorite tracks to play?
As a DJ, my selection of favorite tracks varies depending on the event, the atmosphere, and the audience I'm performing for. However, I usually include a mix of the House, Tech House, Afro House genre that fit the style and energy of the moment. I like to keep my audience excited throughout the night.
What is your favorite set you have done and why?
It's hard to pick a favorite set, as each occasion has its own energy and special moments.
How does it make you feel that your design will be created and become the eleventh limited edition version of the iconic M50x headphones?
It is an incredible honor to see that my design will be part of the eleventh limited edition version of the M50x headphones. Knowing that my creativity and vision will contribute to such an iconic line is an exciting and rewarding experience. It fills me with pride to think that my design will be used and appreciated by so many people around the world, and I hope that I can provide them with an exceptional listening experience and a unique sense of style. It's an exciting time to see my work become a reality.
What's next for you and your DJ career?
For me, the future of my DJ career is exciting and full of possibilities. I plan to continue to explore new opportunities to perform at live events, collaborate with other artists and producers, and further develop my skill as a music creator. I am also interested in expanding my online presence through social media platforms to connect with a wider audience. My goal is to continue to grow as an artist, sharing my passion for music and creating memorable experiences for listeners around the world.
