Question: How do I set up my USB microphone on a Windows 10 operating system?
Answer: Many today find using a USB microphone extremely convenient as compared to using a standard analog microphone with an interface, and the audio quality is much better than the computer’s onboard microphone. Quite often users of USB microphones will find connecting to a Windows 10 operation system a bit challenging. The below information should help with basic setup.
The first time you plug the microphone in, you may see a message that new hardware has been found, or you may see a driver software installed notice. After the first time, you will not see any of these as the computer has already installed the necessary drivers for a USB microphone.
When the USB microphone is connected, Windows 10 will automatically select it as the input and output device.
- To verify or make changes, click the Start window.
- Click the settings icon (the gear).
- When the settings window opens, click System.
- When the System window opens, in the left column, click Sound.
- The Sound tab opens showing the active input and output devices, both of which should be the USB microphone. To use the computer’s internal speakers, external speakers, or headphones as your output device, click “Choose your output device” and in the drop-down menu choose the desired item. (Please note, in this example we are using the ATR2100x-USB microphone, which has its own headphone jack, as both the input and output.)
At this point, your computer is set up to use the ATR2100x-USB microphone as the audio input device and whatever you chose as the audio output device.
The basic setup is now complete, although often customers find that the volume level is not loud enough.
