115th AES CONVENTION — For the sixth year in a row, Audio-Technica showed a strong presence at the annual MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), held August 28th at New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall. Over 40 Audio-Technica microphones were used onstage, including the new Artist Elite® 5000 Series UHF Wireless System, which continues to gain recognition as the wireless mic of choice for high-profile broadcast shows such as the 45th Annual GRAMMY® Awards, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and the recently held VH1 Divas Duets. New York City-based Wireless First, a leading source of wireless sound equipment for major television and production companies nationwide, supplied all the wireless microphones. In addition, award-winning location recording specialists Effanel Music, with music mixers John Harris and Jay Vicari, mixed and recorded the event in their L7 and OSR all-digital remote recording trucks. Effanel also supplied all the Audio-Technica hard-wired microphones for the event. The 2003 VMAs, hosted by Chris Rock, was one of the most widely watched music events of the year. This year’s extravaganza featured live performances by leading artists such as Beyoncé, Metallica, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Coldplay, 50 Cent, Good Charlotte, and Jay-Z. Coldplay, Metallica, Good Charlotte, and Jay-Z all used Audio-Technica front-line microphones, including the Artist Elite 5000 Series UHF Wireless System. In addition, a broad range of Audio-Technica hard-wired microphones was employed for the 2003 VMAs including the AE5400 (vocals), AE2500 (bass/guitar cabinets and kick), AE5100 (hi hat), ATM35 (rack toms), ATM25 (floor tom), ATM23HE (snare), and AT4050 (overheads and guitar cabinets). Also, two AT4049’s were hung from the ceiling at Radio City to convey the audience’s enthusiastic responses. Audio-Technica’s Marketing Director of Retail, Live Sound & Studio, Gary Boss, stated, “Audio-Technica microphones continue to be the choice of leading artists and audio professionals at high-profile broadcast events.
