Perfect Podcasting Starter Kit

The Creator Pack

If you’re looking for beginner podcasting equipment then The CREATOR PACK is for you, striking the perfect balance between affordability and quality. The ATR2500x-USB Microphone can be suspended on the included boom arm and features excellent frequency response, picking up on the subtleties and timbre of your voice, whilst the cardioid polar pattern helps to isolate you without needing a soundproof booth. The upgraded ATH-M20x headphones now feature punchier bass, enhanced sound isolation and improved sound reproduction to ensure you hear exactly what your microphone is picking up.

A Few Points to Consider

XLR or USB?

XLR microphones are analogue devices that require an XLR cable (1) that feeds the analogue signal to an audio interface (2). The interface then converts the analogue signal to digital and feeds the audio to your PC (3) for recording. Within USB microphones, all of the analogue to digital conversion takes place within the microphone – no audio interface required. The digital signal is then fed via USB connection (1) directly into your PC (2).

What's the Difference?

Condenser or Dynamic?

Condenser Mic Characteristics

  • Extremely sensitive – picks up the subtlest sounds in any environment
  • Very articulate audio with a detailed high-frequency capture
  • Requires external power to operate (phantom or battery)
Dynamic Mic Characteristics
  • Minimises room noise – perfect for sonically untreated rooms
  • Smooth audio capture with classic warm broadcast sound
  • Robust construction with no external power requirements

How Do They Capture Sound?

Condenser Microphones

Typical condenser microphones use a lightweight membrane/diaphragm (1) and a fixed plate (2) that act as a capacitor. Sound pressure causes this thin membrane to move. This movement changes the capacitance of the circuit creating an electrical signal. The signal is then captured through your recording device or amplified by a powered speaker.

How Do They Capture Sound?

Dynamic Microphones

Dynamic microphones use a diaphragm (1) connected to a coil of wire (2) that surrounds a magnet (3). The diaphragm is moved by changing sound pressure. This moves the coil, which causes current to flow as it moves through the magnetic field. An electrical signal is then sent to your recording device or speakers which records or amplifies the signal. Dynamic microphones are extremely durable and can handle very high sound pressure levels (SPL).
